Divine Dwelling Place

“They shall make a Sanctuary for Me, and I will [then] dwell in their midst.” (Shemos 25:8) Where did the cedar beams (for the Mishkan) come from? Yaakov our patriarch planted them at the time he descended to Egypt. He told his children: My sons, ultimately you will be redeemed from this place, and the [...]

For Heaven’s Sake?

“…Let them take for me a portion…And I will dwell within them.” (Shemos 25:2,8). Chazal tell us that the word “li” (for me) in the above verse means that a person should give the terumah to Hashem selflessly. So too the gemora says about the making of the mishkan that it should be done selflessly [...]

Who is Supporting Who?

The poles shall remain in the rings of the ark: they shall not be removed from it. (Shemos 25:15) I recently paid a shiva call to the family of a man who merited to live to over 90 years of age! Through his last 10 years of life he had an attendant, one of his [...]

Inside Out

The verse states concerning the Ark: “From within and from without you shall cover it” (Exodus 25:11). Rava said: This alludes to the idea that any Torah scholar whose inside is not like his outside, i.e., whose outward expression of righteousness is insincere, is not to be considered a Torah scholar.  (Yoma 72b:9) Upon seeing [...]
